TWECHAR TOASTS SUCCESS OF NEW SCHOOL BREAKFAST CLUB

Pupils at Twechar Primary are full of snap, crackle and pop thanks to the launch of the school’s new Breakfast Club.

The scheme provides a free Breakfast Club every school day with a choice of healthy food on offer for all pupils and is being supported by Castle Rock Edinvar, Communities Scotland and staff at the school.

Castle Rock Edinvar are the preferred selected housing association to manage the process of providing good quality housing for Twechar. Castle Rock Edinvar approached Head Teacher Marion McIsaac to ask if there were any projects at the school which they could provide support for.

The Breakfast Club initiative was the most popular idea and, following a trial run earlier this year, is proving a big success with over 50 pupils getting up and into school half an hour early for breakfast with their friends.

Head Teacher Marion McIsaac said:

“To quote a very famous breakfast icon – the Breakfast Club at Twechar is grrreat! Latecomers have become early birds, fizzy drinks and crisps for breakfast are a thing of the past and fussy eaters are regularly seen munching on brown bread toast!

“The children are enjoying a healthy start to the day catching up with their friends and classrooms are a more settled place first thing in the morning.”

The club is also a big hit with the children. P5 pupil Tiegan said, “I like the toast and meeting my friends” while Shannon, also from P5, commented, “I like the Weetabix and Rice Crispies”.

Angus Macdonald, Community Regeneration Co-ordinator in Communities Scotland’s Argyll and Clyde team, emphasised the benefits of the project.

“We are delighted to provide support to this pilot project and to see so many children taking advantage of the Breakfast Club.

“Communities Scotland’s Wider Role support for housing associations recognises the big role they can play in regeneration, providing projects and services which improve opportunities and lives in the communities they serve.”
