Tour Twechar

There is plenty to see and do in Twechar, but no visit to the village would be complete without a trip to the Antonine Wall on Barr Hill, which is also the site of an Iron Age fort. Extending right across East Dunbartonshire and running between Twechar in the east and Bearsden in the west, the wall is one of the most important archaeological sites in Scotland and is currently being considered for World Heritage Site Status by UNESCO.

Marking the northernmost extent of Roman territory in Britain, the wall was built between140-142 AD and some of the best preserved sections of the wall can be seen at Barr Hill, where there are remains of a Roman hill fort and bath house.

The nearby wooded areas and hill tops offer a number of attractive walks as does the canal tow path, all of which are linked by foot and cycle paths, while the canal itself can offer a more tranquil setting from which to see Twechar.

A boat trip along the Forth and Clyde canal between Twechar and Auchinstarry is perhaps one of the best ways to fully appreciate the fascinating history and breathtaking scenery that surrounds the village.
